Google Introduces AI-Powered PDF Summarization in Files by Google App

Google has rolled out the highly anticipated “Ask About This PDF” feature in its popular file management app, Files by Google. First announced at the I/O 2024 developer conference, the new feature leverages AI to summarize lengthy PDF documents, enabling users to quickly browse through extensive content.

To access this functionality, users must subscribe to the paid Gemini Advanced plan, set Gemini as the default assistant, and have a device running Android 15.

The feature was initially previewed alongside other AI-powered tools designed for answering questions across various apps, including YouTube videos. This addition mirrors similar capabilities already available in Adobe’s PDF reader application.

As detailed in the latest changelog on the Google Play Store, the recent update to Files by Google includes this PDF summarization tool. Users can activate it by launching the Gemini Assistant while opening a PDF file in the app.

Although the feature is being rolled out gradually, early adopters have reported receiving access. It provides significant value for users handling large volumes of documents daily. This update follows another enhancement in the app, which introduced an integrated PDF reader, further positioning Files by Google as a comprehensive file management solution.
