EU Proposals May Force Apple to Open AirDrop and AirPlay to Android Devices

The European Union has introduced new proposals under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) aimed at compelling Apple to make exclusive features, such as AirDrop and AirPlay, available to Android devices. These measures are part of the EU’s broader effort to reduce Apple’s dominance in the smartphone market within the region.

What the Proposals Entail

If implemented, EU residents could use AirDrop to share files and AirPlay to stream content without needing an iPhone. This marks a significant shift in Apple’s traditionally closed ecosystem, which has been a key selling point for its products.

AirDrop and AirPlay operate through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which facilitate communication between software applications. These APIs are integral to the seamless user experience that Apple’s devices are known for.

Apple’s Response

Apple addressed these proposals in a document titled “Interoperability – December 2024,” warning that excessive compliance with such regulations could compromise user privacy. The company noted that Meta has submitted 15 requests for access to Apple’s software, criticizing the potential risks to user data. Apple highlighted that under the new rules, rejecting these requests could become impossible.

Beyond iPhone Features

The proposals don’t stop at iPhones. They also target exclusive functionalities in Apple’s AirPods and Apple Watch, demanding that proprietary audio and notification technologies be made accessible to third-party devices and accessories.

Competitive Dynamics

According to a report from Android Authority, the EU views Apple’s closed ecosystem as providing an unfair advantage over competitors. While these proposals are not yet legally binding, the Digital Markets Act grants the EU the authority to enforce them or impose significant fines on Apple for non-compliance.

Potential Impact on Apple’s Ecosystem

These regulatory moves are increasing pressure on Apple to adopt more open policies, potentially leading to substantial changes in how the company operates within the EU—and possibly influencing its global strategies as well.
